Arlington joins more than 2,000 other communities across the U.S. that host CROP Hunger Walks each year. Sponsored by Church World Service, CROP Hunger Walks raise funds to provide sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance around the world.

For this 40th Anniversary Walk, NOVA Friends of Refugees is partnering as an organizer to raise awareness of the plight of refugees worldwide and of its work in northern Virginia to welcome, support and advocate for refugees.

Over its 40-year history, the Arlington CROP Hunger Walk has raised more than $1 million to help people struggling to feed their families. “This is one of the largest CROP Hunger Walks in Virginia,” says local event coordinator Kenn Speicher. “Each of our Walkers reaches out to generous donors to sponsor them. We are so grateful for how they come though year after year.”

Twenty-five percent of the money we raise supports AFAC, which now provides groceries each week to more than 2200 families facing food insecurity. Of the people AFAC serves, more than 35% are children and nearly 30% are elderly. “Even in affluent communities like Arlington, too many people live with the threat of hunger,” notes Speicher. “Events like the CROP Hunger Walk are more important than ever.”
