The 2017 session of the Virginia Annual Conference was held June 16-18 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. We’ve compiled the following information to assist lay delegates in preparing to share Annual Conference with their churches.
A New Vision
Bishop Lewis delivered the Episcopal Address, presided over business sessions, and preached at worship services, inspiring those in attendance with her words and her energy. During Sunday’s closing worship she presented the new vision for the Virginia Annual Conference.
A Disciple of Jesus Christ is a lifelong learner who influences others to serve.
When presenting this vision, Bishop Lewis noted that every church will have an intentional discipleship strategy by 2020. She promised to roll out more information and resources over the coming months.

Alexandria pastor, Rev. Reggie Tuck, pastor of Messiah UMC received the Harry Denman Evangelism Award this year. Congratulations to Pastor Reggie!
The laity award recipient is Johnnie Morris of Journey UMC in Amelia. The youth award recipient is Nicole Kent of Cunningham, Charlottesville District.
A new award, the One Matters Discipleship Award, was given to Bethel UMC of Virginia Beach. Bethel has been declining financially and in membership and at one time feared it would close. After revamping programs, inviting children, and having a confirmation class, Bethel increased in professions of faith.
Will your church receive the One Matters or Denman Evangelism Award next year?!

Friday morning, before Annual Conference began, Tom Berlin, pastor of Floris UMC in Arlington and a member of the Commission for a Way Forward, gave a presentation to a standing room only crowd at the convention center. Tom encouraged laity to be leaders in their congregations and encouraged everyone in attendance to read Anatomy of Peace. The Commission on a Way Forward continues to meet and work together as they approach a special called General Conference in 2019. Those delegates elected from Virginia for the 2016 General conference will be our Virginia delegation at the 2019 meeting, per a vote from the Annual Conference body.
